On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an bold commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
